Growing Up on Social Media

I started off on social media from the age of 12. Yes, I made my first Instagram account at the age of 12 and I’ve had it ever since. But even then, I knew how to handle myself online.

As of now, I have a Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook account (I’ve only had my Facebook for 2 years while most of my friends have had one since middle school). I am cautious of what I post on my social media accounts because I want to show a good image of myself to others and future employers.

Most of my social media accounts are linked to one another. My Instagram and Twitter are linked together but my Facebook isn’t linked to anything. I don’t have anything to hide, I just don’t want my family members to see my Instagram or Twitter posts (I really don’t know why I’m like this).

My Instagram account is private, so I have to accept requests for followers, which comes in handy with all the creeps out there. My Twitter isn’t private because—well—since I don’t post any photos really on my Twitter, I don’t need to keep it private. Also, my Twitter is just full of my interests and nothing personal that I don’t want to put out there. If someone were to look on my profiles, they would firsthand find out that I am a huge Marvel fan. They may even mutter the word “nerd” when they get done scrolling through my posts.

I’ve been on social media for almost 8 years now and I’ve seen what it has done to people. Some people have become so obsessed with their image on social media. It has made young girls wary about their appearances, making themselves into someone they’re not. Social media has also played a role on mental health in the recent years. Some social media users suffer from depression and anxiety because of how media perceives self-image.
