In the era of fake news and media, journalism is seen to be going down a pretty steep slope. Not only because jobs in the field are decreasing due to online outlets, but because lately, some government officials and public figures have blamed journalists of their misconceptions among the people.
A couple days ago, I read an article from the Washington
Free Beacon where journalist Alex Griswold wrote about twitter user and Trump
ally Arthur Schwartz going after some journalists who are “anti-Trump.” One
instance out of many mentioned in the article tells of Schwartz digging up an
old, offensive tweet from a journalist who “sparred” with Trump at a White
House news conference. With the constant criticism of journalists, it’s hard as
an aspiring journalist to want to continue in this field.
Now who would have thought that reporters would be among
some of the most dangerous jobs ever? Journalists are being killed because of
what they report. An article from the Citizen Truth talks about Mexico, being
the deadliest place for journalists. Reporters in Mexico are often killed
because of their reporting on powerful figures and well-known “crime groups” in
the country. Javier Valdez Cárdenas was killed after reporting on Sinaloa
Cartel, according to the Citizen Truth article.
Even with these harsh realities that some reporters have to
face, stories still need to be told. People need to realize that journalists
are just doing their jobs. I understand that sometimes, journalists can be seen
as people who just won’t stop to get the latest scoop but that’s a part of the
job. They have to keep the people informed; if not journalists, then who else?
What is news without those who write it?
